Cheese market – 2020

Ukrainian cheese market is subject to constant changes.  Unfortunately, domestic cheese makers cannot call these changes positive.  There is a number of reasons, both external and internal, for such pessimistic view on the domestic cheese making.  The latest impact was made by the coronavirus pandemic, which swept almost all countries of the world, including Ukraine.

One of the external causes is the geopolitical crisis in relations with Russia.  Now Ukraine is not considered as an exporter of cheese, because we sell only 5-6 thousand tons of cheese to foreign markets.

Moreover, because of low world cheese prices and high Ukrainian ones, our country is already turning into a major importer of cheese. It is quote possible that this year every fourth kilogram of cheese sold in Ukraine will have a foreign origin.

So, a good forecast for the development of the Ukrainian cheese market for the coming years is hardly possible.  Production will be reducing, exports are unlikely to increase and imports will grow even more.

Nevertheless, under certain conditions, the forecast for the development of Ukrainian cheese-making business may change to very positive. Ukrainian dairy industry needs urgent reforms. Tomake them possible the market operators, government and dairy farmers need to make considerable efforts.
