Ukraine: Milk production continues to shrink

According to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, milk production in January-May 2021 in all categories of milk producers decreased to 3 million 433.3 thousand tons, which is 5.3% less compared to the period under review in 2020 (3 million 626.9 thousand tons).

Industrial dairy farms produced 1 million 144.9 thousand tons of milk, which is 0.6% less than in the period under review last year.  The most active in increasing production are: Ternopil (+ 13.2%), Khmelnytsky (+ 5.9%), Vinnytsia (5.8%), Kherson (+ 5.6%), Zaporozhye (+ 4.3%) regions.

Top 5 regions where industrial enterprises produced the most milk in 5 months of this year:

  • Poltavska – 165.1 thousand tons
  • Cherkasska – 122 thousand tons
  • Kharkivska – 103.3 thousand tons
  • Chernihivska – 101.4 thousand tons
  • Kyivska – 94 thousand tons

The household cow owners produced 2 million 288.4 thousand tons of milk, which is 7.5% less compared to the period under review in 2020.  Milk production increased only in Ternopil region (+ 2.4%).

The data is given without taking into account the temporarily occupied territories of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, the city of Sevastopol and part of the temporarily occupied territories in Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
