Until recently in Ukraine cheese-making  was considered by dairy  processors as the most profitable dairy business. Just cheese-making absorbed the biggest share of the milk produced in the country. The biggest investments were also directed into cheese production.

In the last two years the situation has changed dramatically. Huge currency depreciation, the unprecedented since 90s inflation, banking crisis and significant decrease of the population purchasing power made an extremely negative impact on business. The loss of the Crimean market and the market of Donbass which means hundred thousands of consumers have also added to this impact.

All these domestic woes were aggravated by the Russian ban on the dairy imports and general crisis in world dairy market. Actually, the Russian ban on imports of Ukrainian dairy was the most painful for cheese-makers. Many companies, mainly the biggest ones who based their business on cheese exports to Russia suffered the most.

However, the crisis will not be lasing forever, it always ends. In the future Ukrainians will definitely increase consumption of cheese. Any war also ends with peace. Even the deliveries of cheese to Russia will be restored one day. But such optimistic expectations will not come true neither now, nor even this or next year. But by that time Ukrainian cheese makers have to withstand the difficulties to stay on the market. Much to be done for this.
