Ukraine: cheese exports volume and prices are critically low

Ukrainian cheese makers still have some diffulties with sales. The demand for this product has not increased and supply is quite high – INFAGRO.

In this situation, more and more cheese makers, especially small ones, begin to “drain” products at discounted prices. Fortunately, the purchase prices of milk are low and they can afford doing this, especially those who use a large amont of milk purchased from households.

Theoretically, the cost of cheese production is perhaps even as low as 60-70 UAH/kg, so in mid June it was easy to purchase certain amounts of semi-solid cheese of “Rosijskiy” type at a price of 80 UAH/kg. However, the leading operators still hold the level of about 100 UAH/kg (for distributors 86-92). This is why one can hardly find in the supermarket good quality cheese cheaper then 115 UAH/kg. So far, some of the Ukrainian cheese makers began to earn a little on domestic sales.

But export challenges are still big. Both orices and volumes are low. Because of the limited demand and low raw milk prices exports sales were very small. In May Ukraine exported only 407 tons of cheese and 1.7 ths. tons of cheese products.
