Cheese market (2021)

Ukrainian cheese market has been constantly changing.  Unfortunately, most of these changes are not positive for domestic cheesemakers.  There is a number of reasons for such a pessimistic assessment.

Firstly, the shortage of raw milk supply has significantly worsened, as a result it is quite expensive.  The cost of cheese production in Ukraine is also too high, and not only because of the high cost of milk.  Cheese business is poorly consolidated, not many large enterprises can boast modern equipment and a reasonably small number of staff.  There are difficulties with management, marketing and sales.  The big problem is the monopoly of retail chains which dictate the rules of trade, forms of payment and prices.  From the factory to the shelf cheese often adds up to 50% in price.

Secondly, Ukrainian cheese market was strongly affected by the loss of the Russian market, where most of cheese had been previously supplied.  Now Ukraine cannot be considered an exporter of cheese, because only 4-5 thousand tons of cheese are now sold to foreign markets.  In addition, against the background of low world prices for cheese and high Ukrainian ones, our country is rapidly becoming a major importer of this product.  Every third kilogram of cheese sold in our country is imported from abroad.

On the positive side, there is a stable increase in cheese consumption by Ukrainians.

But things can change if the raw milk shortage is overcome and cheesemakers manage to reorganize production and management processes.  The potential for this in Ukraine is huge.

Although now the negative tendencies  are prevailing in the domestic cheese industry, the companies that are now actively developing will stay in the market and in the medium term they will have a profitable business.  Weak operators will be forced to leave the market.

This report will give a comprehensive picture of the Ukrainian cheese market and help to make the right decisions to save your cheese business in Ukrainian market at this difficult time.
