Cheese market – 2014

report-cheese-webUntil recently, the cheese-making and the whole milk production have been the core of Ukrainian dairy industry. They were considered most profitable sectors of dairy business.

This year, the cheese-making industry in Ukraine has undergone dramatic changes, unfortunately negative. Because of the war with Russia (and not only the trade one), the production and export of cheese has significantly decreased. The economic crisis lead to the population income fall, and many consumers have to exclude cheese from their daily ration.

Crisis never lasts forever, it always passes. In the long-term, Ukrainians will increase consumption of cheese again. Any war ends with truce. Politics sometimes does not keep up with business. Delivery of cheese to Russia will sooner or later be resumed. But such optimistic expectations cannot be justified immediately. Till that time, domestic cheese-makers have to survive, save their dignity and stay on the market. It is necessary to properly diversify the dairy production, try to find new markets and stay one step ahead of competitors because not all of the market players will be capable to stay in business next year.
